The Mountain : Trailhead Lodging

The Mountain

The Mountain

Seward is a place with a plethora of trails that are perfect for the avid hiker, and Mount Marathon is where you can find some of the best. Mount Marathon measures in at about 3,022 feet. On the 4th of July, hundreds of people gather to race up the mountain’s trails, one steep mile up and back down. If you look carefully along the side of the mountain, you can see the trail trace its way up to the summit.

Hikers be aware that these are NOT easy hikes and all persons should approach these trails at their own risk! As with all hikes, please remain aware!

The Bowl

Seward locals find this hike as one of their favorites, as it offers gorgeous panoramic views of Resurrection Bay, as well as lush flowers and diverse vegetation. If you find yourself one who is curious about glaciation, there are few sites quite as accessible to the land’s geographic history as this. This hike may take as long as three hours, and it is considered a steep trail. Racer’s Trail

What began as a bet over 100 years ago continues today as one of the most challenging 5K races ever. In 1915, a barroom challenge declared that no one could race up Mt. Marathon and back within an hour. Although the first runner ultimately lost his bet, clocking in at 62 minutes, it has not stopped many to take the challenge on for themselves. If you’re looking to conquer this trail, prepare for one of the most extreme hikes of your life. This hike is not recommended for anyone except for the most fit, hardcore hiker. Please thoroughly read through all photos in the gallery below prior to conquering The Mountain.
